Every piece you make on Pikaly is generative art: it’s produced by an algorithm — a set of rules — rather than drawn by hand or guessed by an AI image model. Here’s exactly how that works, and why it makes the result genuinely yours.

The algorithm is the medium

On Pikaly the artwork isn’t a fixed image drawn by hand — it’s a system. Each generator is code with rules for how color, shape, line and chance combine. The craft isn’t in drawing the final picture; it’s in designing the space of everything the system can produce, and leaving room for it to surprise you.

In 1967 Sol LeWitt wrote that “the idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” His wall drawings were sold as written instructions for others to execute — the instruction, not the marks on the wall, was the artwork. Vera Molnár was already composing with algorithms by hand in 1959, in what she called her “machine imaginaire,” before she ever used a computer. Pikaly works in that tradition: the system is the art, and each piece you make is one live execution of it.

You design it, the system renders it

When you open a generator, you’re not picking from a gallery of pre-made images. You’re steering a live system: choose the palette, adjust the density and composition, reshuffle until it feels right. The algorithm then renders one specific result. Your choices plus the system equal the piece — a real collaboration.

Every piece has a seed — real provenance

Each artwork is generated from a seed: a short code like #AC2ERSRM shown beside your piece. The seed is the fingerprint of that exact output. Feed the same seed back in and you get the same artwork, pixel for pixel, every time — deterministic, like fxhash and Art Blocks generative tokens.

That means your piece isn’t a random throwaway. It’s one identifiable point in a vast possibility space, and it can always be reproduced from first principles. Save the seed and you’ve saved the artwork.

This is generative art, not AI image generation

The difference matters, so here it is plainly:

• AI image generators (Midjourney, DALL·E, Stable Diffusion) are trained on millions of existing images and statistically guess pixels from a text prompt. The output is probabilistic and derivative, and you can’t reproduce it exactly.
• Generative art is deterministic and rule-based. The artist designs the system; no other artists’ work is scraped or used for training; nothing is “prompted.” The same inputs always produce the same output.
• Pikaly is entirely the second kind. Every generator is hand-written code in a specific design tradition — Bauhaus geometry, Sol LeWitt’s line systems, Albers’ color studies, Bridget Riley’s op-art, Jean Arp’s laws of chance.
